Wii-actions, Part 1

10:47pm. Excitement is building.

11:06pm. In the car now, driving to the midnight launch.

11:20pm. I have in my hand ticket number 53, handed to me by EB employee Mark.

11:35pm. Crowd starts to form. EB run out of tickets. Good thing I got here early.

11:59pm. Seconds left. The 40+ crowd is getting restless.

12:01am. Australia holds their breath.

The doors open. EB employee David stands and explains what will happen tonight, 3 people in, 3 people out, at any one time. Makes sense, with 3 security guards patrolling (Or as David put it, “rent-a-cops.” I wonder if they even know what they’re protecting). Tickets run from 44 – 64. I will be in the third group inside. 44-46 moves inside. Eager fans watch with jealousy as they walk to get their Wii’s. The crowd falls silent, aware that the initial excitement is over. After a moment, groups resume in conversation.

12:12am. 44-46 still not out. Should be done by now, what’s the hold up?

New fans turn up. Each of them ask David what is going on, each leave disappointed that they have to wait after the ticket group.
“But even if I’ve pre-ordered?”
“Sorry mate.” Umm, news flash buddy, we’ve all pre-ordered. Back of the line.

12:16am. The first Wii-er exits, number 44. We find his name is Steve. As he walks through the doors, lifting that prized bag above his head, the crowd breaks into applause. He doesn’t stay to chat either; Steve rushes off to play Wii.

12:25am. Security guard comes out and announces that everybody will be let into the plaza to line up in ticket order, and then people without tickets. The crowd basically run to EB. My ticket secures me 3rd place in line. The wait begins again. I can see the Wii videos in store, EB have gone ballistic on advertising. Cardboard cut outs, extra accessories; the store is a blinding flash of white.
“So close, and yet so far,” as one fan put it.

12:27am. I start to chat to other fans in the line. We talk about EB.
“I pre-ordered Wii Play and they told me it came with the Wii-mote and nunchuck, however it only comes with the nunchuk. I was pissed.”
“They did the same to me as well.”

Seems I wasn’t the only one who EB shafted, methinks I’ll be shopping at JB Hi-Fi from now on. Mark begins to talk about Sony. He believes in 10 years “Sony will be belly up as a company.” When he leaves the woman next to me says he looks like he’s on crack, I laugh and agree.

12:35am. Finally, my number is called. I turn and enter EB Games, Elizabeth. The attendant greets me with a nice smile. I hand over my receipt and collect my Wii, shutting down the EB attendant for the extra $60 warranty (a complete rip-off) and $5 game guarantee for Twilight Princess.

I leave the store and Mark grabs my hand, nearly shaking it off.
“Enjoy your Wii!” he yells. Outside, I look in the bag. Wii Console, Twilight Princess (Wii), Wii console bag and EB catalogue (typical) stare back at me. I hop in the car and resist the urge to tear open the box.

12:45am. Driving home. The urge is too much; I rip open Twilight Princess and read the instruction booklet.

12:56am. Home now. I gingerly open the box and peer inside.

Australians Wii’d on

Nintendo’s finally released their urine-sounding (and possibly smelling, yet still unconfirmed) console into the arms of loving Australians nationwide today. As expected, Nintendo fans have taken to the streets at midnight to welcome in the launch of the Wii console. While official launch celebrations may not have been as elegant and large-scaled as the Xbox 360’s launch party in Sydney was earlier this year, it’s still promising to see some 30-40 fans turn out in even small cities like Mildura.

Gamer Within was on location at both the Mildura and Adelaide EB Games midnight openings, soaking in the atmosphere, the excitement and the happy smiles of Gamer Withiners Aaron and Zach, who picked up their very own Wii consoles.

Gamer Within's Zach was eager to Wii

Below, you can find a small collection of photos taken from the relatively quiet Mildura launch. Would have loved to have taken a picture of the line-up and gathering outside of the store, but the kind security guard who was constantly breathing down my back advised that it wouldn’t be the best of ideas to take a picture of the store outside - some “center policy,” which governed the shopping complex in which EB Games Mildura is housed in.

The countdown begins

Look, if you want to get technical, (and I’m sure a few of you will), the countdown began months ago, when it was announced Wii will be launching on Australian shores on December 7th, 2006.

But I’m starting it today for two reasons.

1. I’m the one writing this article.

2. Today my Wii console has finally been paid off.

Yes, I can breathe easy, for now my very own Wii is all accounted for. I’m sure many of you paid your consoles off months ago. Or are you one of the confident few that believe they’ll be able to simply walk into a store and buy a Wii? I would advise against that.

Wii is a mere 6 days away from wowing the pants off consumers everywhere. In preparation, Nintendo have released a list of stores around Australia that will be having a midnight launch of the console, with some stores even offering prizes and competitions for those hardcore Nintendo fans.

I’ll be there at EB Elizabeth, picking up my Wii console and Twilight Princess (Wii) and then spending the next few days in hibernation, leaving only to review Wii games for Gamer Within.

Are you buying a Wii? Pre-ordered?

What an extra $200 gets the gamer

Compare the following linked images… and decide if the hyped Cell Processor and ’supercomputer’ give you anything extra at all. Sony claims the next gen arrives when they do. Looks like it has been here for quite a while already. Thanks for showing up late.

Quotes from Sony’s Ken Kutaragi:

“With the PS3, our intentions have been to create a machine with supercomputer calculation capabilities for home entertainment…You can experience the 4D world.”

The 4th D is for what? Technically TIME is the 4th dimension. So, Sony will take you backwards or forwards in time? Looks like they take you nowhere.

“We want for consumers to think to themselves ‘I will work more hours to buy one’. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else…The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline.”

Perhaps the beatings and shootings just show how much discipline those children and adults have… you think? Or maybe it’s the discipline required to not smash the unit when you realize you could have bought 7 360 games with that money instead.

“Microsoft is trailing behind us, but they are not a threat. They are good at improving [on products], but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology…Microsoft shoots for the moon. Sony shoots for the sun.”

And Microsoft is mooning you all the way to the bank.

Bungie’s 5 year Halo Anniversary Video Special

Bungie has released a special Halo 3 featurette on the 5 year anniversary of Halo. Featuring all new old video and some promo stuff, it is really maybe worth a look.

Honestly… you release basically nothing for months.. then on the 5 year anniversary you release the same freaking footage you released months ago, but add in some happy fans at Halo 2 release lineups? What the hell?

We expect better than this Bungie. Fans we may be, but we’re not worshipping at the Halo alter with this degree of reverance. If you are going to release something on an anniversary, make it something… not recycled and remixed old news.

Reasons to Love Gears of War

Anyone with a 360 should be playing Gears of War right now. Personally, I’m very stoked that the game lives up to its considerable hype (something Halo 2, arguably, did not). My full review is on GamerWithin, but upon putting in another 10 or so hours into the game, I’ve come up with a list of things I most appreciate/love about this shooter. What do you all think about it?

Things to Love (in no particular order):

1. The Guitar Riff
This will become most player’s favourite sound. A subtle, but cool, guitar riff plays when you have killed all enemies in a particular firefight. It’s your cue to get off your haunches and move forward once again. As some of the battles can be incredibly hard, hearing this sound is a reward in itself.

2. Blind Firing
The Casual difficulty level never actually gives need for this, but Hardcore and Insane certainly do. While the cover system is great, even exposing yourself for a few seconds can spell your death. Enter the capacity to blind fire over cover at enemies at close to medium range. On Insane, this has saved my life more times than I can count - in just the first chapter alone. It is particularly useful for chopping up rushing enemies and for getting other to drop back into cover. When they do hunker down again, that’s your hint to pop up and start laying down the smack on their exposed bits or as soon as they come up again.

3. The Lancer
I’m not sure if the assault rifle with the chainsaw on the end is the coolest weapon in a FPS ever, but it makes the top ten in my books. Not only does it look cool, have good accuracy and rate of fire, but its close-range attack is some of the greatest visceral fun you can have in a game. The only thing to remember is to not rev it up until you are in range of its attack. On Insane, starting it even a few steps out of range will result in your intended target spinning around and killing you with a shotgun or a smackdown before you can get the teeth into him. I found that out the hard way a few times.

4. Graphics
Beyond the resolution and general look - which is awesome - I am in love with all the little touches. Look at the architecture of buildings that are in the distance or outside of your battleground. You will notice that each one has an incredible level of detail. This is something seldom seen, and it just permeates this game. Every environment has so many unique touches and little attentions to detail that it is possible to just spend time wandering around and gawking at everything.

5. Difficulty
Halo had its Legendary, and Gears has its Insane mode. I appreciate the fact that this game is very tough on default levels and next to impossible on Insane. There is built in longevity here, and a careful bit of tactics can get you through every battle alive. The key lies in planning, familiarity with the encounters, and the ability to adjust tactics on the fly…. all the components that make final victory so very sweet.

6. Level Access
You can instantly see what levels you have completed, and what sub-sections in each have been done at the varying difficulty levels. Want to get Insane ratings on each chapter but are getting stuck somewhere? Just skip it, move on, and return to it at a later time. It operates about as perfectly as you could hope.

7. Co-op
This is my favourite feature of Gears, and likely one of the principal reasons it will sell so well. Co-op works nearly flawlessly, and once again you can just leap into whatever chapter and section with a buddy that you wish. Drop in co-op is great too. No reason why a buddy cannot join your game already well underway.

8. The Locust
Face it, these bastards look mean, fight well, and utterly deserve to die horrible deaths. Nothing is worse than an adversary that does not inspire any desire to kill them, and the Locust fit the bill as grade-A villains very nicely. The voice work is cool too. I though that them speaking some English would ruin them (like the Covenant’s English did), but it appears to work very well.

9. Marcus
This guy is great. He looks like a total bad-ass, is a wonderful anti-hero, and becomes someone you can connect with over the course of the game. We need a lot more info on him and his back-story in the next installment, but the thread is off to a fine start.

10. Active Reloading
Who would have thought that Epic would discover a means to make even reloading your gun entertaining? The system is brilliant in its conceptualization and execution. Nothing like nailing a reload in the heat of battle, and getting a damage boost for those rounds as well. Of course, flubbing it can cause your deathsomething I believe makes the whole process crucial in just the right degree.

Things that are not quite so great

There is always room for improvement, and here are a few things that still stand out as odd or a bit rough around the edges.

1. Marcustone of voice
Get to the mineslevel beginning and listen to one particular comment of his. When the Wenches that glow are seen, Dom says, “Did you see that?” Marcus replies, “Yep. Kinda wish I hadn’t.” Play that clip alongside one of Eyore’s from Winnie the Pooh, and tell me they don’t sound identical - I mean, completely and utterly the same. It’s quite hilarious actuallybut one that does break the mood a little. All we need is Dom to sound like Piglet and weve got the perfect match for hunting Heffalumps.

2. Adversarial Options
Quite frankly, not enough. No clan support, no invites in ranked games, no capture the flag, territories, or other modes. Poor post-match and in-match camera support will make this less likely to be a contender for the Professional League’s roster of titles. We need some fleshing out here.

3. The Brumack
Why can we not fight him!? One of the coolest enemies ever, and he only shows up in a tiny cut-scene? What’s the deal here?

4. Not enough destructibility
I want to blow massive chunks out of the walls, see the dust in the air, and witness more stuff shatter and splinter. Yes, I’ve been playing F.E.A.R. and lot, as well as the original XBox’s BLACK. We’re next-gen, and I know Unreal Engine 3 can handle this... so let us see more of it please Epic. It would add a lot to the action.

5. Cost
It is worth every penny, but games just keep going up in price. Ouch to the Bank Balance.

So, what do you think? What parts of the game did you find particularly great… or not so great?

Aaron Touches Wii

I’m sure you’re well aware by now that Blogger Within’s Aaron Kleemann is a big fan of Nintendo, and has an unnaturally obsessive interest in their upcoming next-gen console. Recently he had the chance to go hands-on with Nintendo’s innovative new console, testing out Wii Sports, Wii Play and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Be sure to check out his impressions, and his stupid “press hat”, over on Gamer Within.
